Shirley About

Shirley Fan is a registered dietitian and culinary professional with over 10 years of food media experience, specializing in recipe development, writing, and nutrition consulting. She has authored, coauthored, and contributed to numerous cookbooks, including The Flying Brownie: 100 Recipes for Homemade Treats that Pack Easily, Ship Fresh, and Taste Great (Harvard Common Press), and New York Times bestsellers such as The Food You Crave by Ellie Krieger, and Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives by Guy Fieri. Her work has also appeared in Food Network Magazine, Whole Living (Body + Soul), Life & Style, Fine Cooking, and websites like RealSimple.com, Today.com, iVillage.com, and Glamour.com.

Prior to striking out on her own, Shirley spent six years at the Food Network, where she wrote scripts for television shows, analyzed recipes for nutritional content, contributed to cookbooks, and assisted in the launch of Food Network Magazine. She also developed content for the network’s companion website, FoodNetwork.com.

Shirley received her M.S. in clinical nutrition from New York University, holds a culinary arts diploma from the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City, and earned her B.A. from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. She is the recipient of scholarships from the James Beard Foundation and the American Dietetic Association.

Shirley lives in Brooklyn with her vegetarian husband, and counts Taiwanese shaved ice as one of her favorite foods. She enjoys running and has participated in a number of long-distance races, including the ING New York City Marathon.
